Career Awareness Class Expectations
Mrs. Logue
Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:
Welcome to Career Awareness! It is an eighth grade course in which students will learn the process of making informed choices about their career plans. The course is graded and it meets one time each six-day cycle for one nine week grading period.
This course addresses the following Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for Career Education and Work concerning Career Awareness and Planning:
- Identify careers that are related to student interests, abilities, and aptitudes. 13.1.8.A
- Explain the relationship among local employment, training programs and employment opportunities. 13.1.8.C
- Analyze the relationship between school subjects and extra-curricular activities to career preparation. 13.1.8.E
- Apply the components of career planning through the development of an individual career plan. 13.1.8.F
The major topics to be covered include choosing a career by considering one’s interests, abilities, and work values, completing the Career Decision Making System, gathering information about various careers, how to make career decisions, developing an educational plan to prepare for a career field, and exposure to a variety of careers.
The majority of the assignments will be completed in class, but some will require work in addition to class time. The student’s work will be assessed in the following earned-points format:
Assignment and point values
| Interests, Abilities and Work Values Assignment | 20 points |
| Career Decision Making (CDM) System | 100 points |
| Researching specific careers | 10 points each |
| Developing a career plan with parent input | 100 points |
| Developing an educational plan | 100 points |
| Completion of writing prompt | 100 points |
| Career Poster | 50 points |
| Career Presentation | 50 points |
For example, if a homework assignment is worth 10 points, the entire 10 points are earned for completing the assignment according to directions and fewer points are earned by not completing the task correctly. Assignments may be added or deleted at any time. At the end of the marking period the points will be calculated into a percentage grade and recorded on the report card. The grading scale is described in the student handbook. Cheating of any type will result in a grade of a zero and be punished by the school’s discipline policy.
All in class work will be due at the conclusion of that class and homework will be due at the next class. It is the student’s responsibility to make up work upon returning from an absence. Please see me to get the assignment or check my web page.
Students must be prepared for class by bringing completed assignments and a pencil. Also, all students are expected to behave in a manner, which will enable them and their classmates to benefit the most from the instructional process.
If there are questions or problems, please call me at 570-368-2441.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Mary Beth Logue
