Loyalsock Valley Counseling Office

General Information

As the elementary school counselor serving students in kindergarten through fourth grade, my role is to support the academic, social, and emotional development of every child. Elementary school counseling is a proactive, comprehensive program designed to help students build the skills they need to succeed in school and beyond. A comprehensive school counseling program is comprised of individual, small group, and whole class lessons as direct support to the students. The goal of the school counseling program is to ensure that every student feels safe, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Individual Counseling

Students may meet individually with the school counselor for short-term support with concerns such as friendship challenges, emotional regulation, family changes, anxiety, grief, or problem-solving skills. These meetings provide a safe, supportive space where students can express their feelings, develop coping strategies, and build confidence.

Small Group Counseling & Lunch Bunch

Small groups bring together students who share similar needs or experiences. Groups may focus on topics such as social skills, emotional regulation, coping skills, friendship building, or impulse control. Working in a group setting allows students to practice new skills, learn from peers, and build positive connections.

Classroom Guidance Lessons

Lessons focus on important developmental topics such as kindness, conflict resolution, growth mindset, career awareness, bully prevention, and emotional regulation. Classroom guidance supports all students and reinforces a positive school climate.

Schoolwide Program Involvement

The school counseling program is closely connected to many of the initiatives that support student success at Loyalsock Valley Elementary:

  • PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports): Promoting positive behavior, recognizing student achievements, and helping create a safe and respectful school environment.
  • MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports): Collaborating with staff to identify student needs and provide appropriate academic and behavioral interventions.
  • CST (Child Study Team): Working alongside teachers, specialists, and administrators to review student progress and develop plans that support individual learners.
  • Playground Peace Patrol: Work with a group of 4th grade students who are trained in peer mediation to help resolve conflicts on the playground.

Referrals to the School Counselor

Students may be referred to the school counselor in several ways. Referrals can be made by parents or guardians, teachers, or other school staff members. In addition, students are encouraged to self-refer if they would like to speak with the counselor. Our goal is to ensure that support is accessible and responsive to student needs. Parents are always welcome to contact the school counselor directly with questions or concerns.

Family & Community Connections

School counselors also serve as liaisons between families and community resources. When families need additional support such as mental health services, food assistance, housing resources, or information on other community programs, we help connect them with appropriate outside agencies and services.
