Sticky Bun Wednesdays: The sweet treat to get you through the week

What makes Wednesday mornings at Montoursville Area High School, in the second-floor flex space so enjoyable for students? The sticky buns.

Sold by Key Club members, Mr. Sticky’s sticky buns can be purchased for two dollars apiece.

“It is just a sticky bun, but it’s definitely super good,” said freshman Londyn Williamson.

Although it is just a sticky bun, the process of making them available to students started three years ago.

Sticky Bun Wednesdays are run by Key Club, which is advised by Mrs. Andrea Tira. Key Club started Sticky Bun Wednesdays in order to “Raise money to offset the cost of the District Convention for members who are interested,” said Tira.

The District Convention is a convention where many different non-profit school clubs come together in which “You can expect informative workshops, meaningful service projects, new friends, and so much more!”

The process of getting and selling the sticky buns is pretty simple.

“Each week senior Kelly Friel places our order with Mr.Sticky’s.

Then a Key Club member signs up to pick up the sticky buns and brings them to the flex space to be sold. Two additional members sign up each week to sell the sticky buns in the flex space between 7:45 am and 8:15 am,” said Tira.

On Wednesday mornings, Mr. Sticky’s can expect an order from the high school for 5 dozen sticky buns.

Once they are brought back to the high school, they are sold for two dollars, making Key Club a profit of 88 cents per sticky bun.

Key Club makes a pretty good profit that “Varies each week, but most weeks we sell out,” said Tira.

Not only does Key Club profit from the Sticky Buns, students also have the opportunity to get a nice sweet breakfast to help them push on through the middle of the week.

When asking students who purchased or have purchased sticky buns in the past, their responses were extremely positive.

The convenience of the sticky buns, aside from the taste, is one of the main reasons people buy them.

Would you recommend students purchase a sticky bun and why? “Yeah I would, because people need to eat breakfast in the morning and it’s just that; breakfast,” said Williamson.

Williamson said she purchases sticky buns about every two weeks, but she is still usually “Pretty excited” on Wednesdays.

Freshman Faith Berwanger’s response was a whole different story. Berwanger purchases a sticky bun every Wednesday and is often very excited on Wednesday mornings.

Like Williamsom said in the beginning they are “Just sticky buns” and there’s not anything really special about them. “They would be more special if they had them every day,” said Faith.

Berwanger is a big advocate for the sticky buns and recommends them because “People deserve to have one.” This is about as simple of a response as a person can give.

High school students do have a pretty heavy workload throughout the final part of their academic careers. The workload is very different between all four grades but it’s enough to keep students busy and maybe even stressed.

Something as straightforward as getting a sticky bun on a Wednesday morning may help relieve some stress and help students refocus for the upcoming day.

I asked Williamson and Berwanger if they wanted to let other students know anything else about Sticky Bun Wednesdays and they did.

“Eat a sticky bun every Wednesday, you won’t regret it,” said Berwanger. Williamson then followed by saying “It’s simply just a good day,”

When doing interviews and getting responses the only word that describes Sticky Bun Wednesdays is simple.

Since Key Club started this tradition three years ago, they wanted to give students a delicious morning treat, while not going overboard with something extravagant and complicated.

“Yes, it’s the only reason I come to school on Wednesdays”, said Berwanger.

Fun Fact:

Sixty sticky buns every Wednesday is a lot, but how many have been sold in total? To find this, I found the number of Wednesdays that the school has been in session, starting from the first time Key Club sold them, all the way until March 20th, 2024. Then that number was multiplied by the number of sticky buns sold each Wednesday. The approximate number of sticky buns that have been sold, is an impressive 6,600 Mr.Sticky’s sticky buns. This also means that Key Club has made almost $6,000 in the past three years and that buyers are making a difference in the school and its clubs.
