On April 9 and April 24, senior Reese Peterson took the Academic Decathlon online nationals test.
Peterson took first place overall in the state for varsity academic decathlon.
“It was a really cool experience,” Peterson said. “The thing I’m proudest of isn’t getting to nationals, it’s seeing this team come together.”
Peterson spent the year helping lead the Academic Decathlon team through scrimmages, meets, and the state competition.
Academic Decathlon adviser Mr. Mitch Hart said that this was the first year competitors could qualify as an individual.
“He did all the work, Reese taught himself stuff, he led the team, he did an awesome job, and he makes everything fun,” Hart said. “I wasn’t completely surprised when they announced him on the stage, it was a great moment.”
The theme of this year’s test was the 1920s. Peterson took the test on literature, science, music, art, economics, social science, math, and he wrote an essay on The Great Gatsby.
At the national level, Peterson took bronze in music, essay, and overall as well as taking silver in economics.
Peterson will be attending King’s College in the fall to double major in economics and international relations.
“The team didn’t score quite high enough to make nationals, but I’m really proud us overall,” Peterson said.
