The Theatre Arts department descended “Under the Sea”

The spring musical is something that all members of our community look forward to. This year, the cast and crew left its audiences speechless by the end of each performance.

The preparation that this musical included with it came a long way before the new year set in.

“[We] started choreo in mid- November and in January we started rehearsing everyday,” said senior Brooklyn Hazen who played the lead role, Ariel.

This cast knew that “The Little Mermaid” was going to be their 2025 spring musical back in the 2023-24’ school year.

“My first reaction was to be super excited because I knew it would be dance heavy and I was looking forward to performing iconic songs,” said sophomore Cat Hittle who played a Chef, and was also a part of the Under the Sea ensemble while Hazen said, “I was ecstatic! I was very excited to do an iconic Disney show.”

To successfully put together a musical like this one, it takes a lot of work. This cast began staying after school every day after coming back from Christmas Break for rehearsal. When tech week rolls around they stay at the school until at least 9:00 every night leading up to opening night.

“The most challenging part was practicing the choreography and always having energy,” said Hittle.

Memories are a core part to musicals such as this one, and junior Lilly McCulloch said, “[My] favorite memory was the bubbles in ‘Under The Sea.’”

While the cast was performing the upbeat song, bubbles descended onto the audience from the catwalk above it.

McCulloch played Flotsam, one of Ursula’s pet eels, and said she was very excited when she initially heard about this musical.

“Eating lunch in the cafeteria during a Saturday rehearsal, we all bonded, shared food, and took funny pictures,” said Hittle when she was asked about her favorite memory.

McCulloch said that her favorite song and scene was “Under the Sea,” while Hazen said that her favorite scene was “Under the Sea” and her favorite song was “She’s in Love.”

“My favorite scene was the mayhem scene when the chefs and Grace chase Sebastian around. I thought it was fun and everyone always finished the scene smiling. My favorite song was “Kiss The Girl” because it is so gorgeous,” said Hittle.

Both McCulloch and Hazen agreed that Friday night was their best performance, but Hittle counter argued that Saturday night was their strongest because the energy from the audience was spectacular.

“[My] favorite part of the production was hanging out with my friends,” said McCulloch, while Hittle said, “My favorite part was building new memories with my friends on Saturday rehearsals.”

Hazen said that her favorite part was just being able to see every smaller piece of this musical such as the costumes, set pieces, and music all come together.

Each member of the cast said they had a favorite piece of the set.

“Either the cool ‘water’ we had hanging from the ceiling of the stage or the moving boat in Kiss the Girl!” said Hazen, while Hittle said, “I loved Ursula’s throne! It turned out so gorgeous and it looked amazing and regal!”
