Tournaments strengthen teams

While many students were utilizing their Christmas break as a time of relaxation and rejuvenation, the winter sports teams were competing in tournaments all over PA.

The wrestling team competed in the King of the Mountain Tournament on Dec. 10 and 11 and Powerade on Dec. 27 and 28.

The team placed either 1st or 2nd during King of the Mountain.

“Each day we can encourage each other to improve overall,” said freshman Maxton Williamson when asked what the team should work on for the final duration of their season.

Williamson has made several appearances on the varsity mat during the 2024-25 season.

Although Williamson did not wrestle in King of the Mountain, he went and supported his teammates.

“I can push myself to pass the limit and also my partner, and to improve as a wrestler every day and to positively improve the team,” said Williamson when asked what his goals were to improve during the last portion of their season.

Williamson also would like the team to qualify for states.

On December 27 and 28, the girls’ baseball team competed in a tournament hosted at Hughesville High School.

They faced Wyalusing and Selinsgrove and went 0-2.

“We played well and there is room for improvement. We just need to work on communication more and maintain positivity,” said senior Danika Seese when she was asked about what the team’s strengths and weaknesses were.

“Our team did very well with working hard until the clock ran out no matter what the score was,” said freshman Marleigh Bainbridge. “Our team struggled with running an offensive play and making smarter decisions when we had the ball. We can work on playing more together as a team and running our offensive plays, and our goal is to work together and win some unexpected games.”

Both Seese and Bainbridge agreed that Selinsgrove was the most challenging team because they made quick decisions and transitions.

Bainbridge feels that she did well with her jump shots, and her three-point shots, and Seese feels that her work effort during the games was strong.

“I struggled to stay confident, but I am lucky that I have my teammates to always pick me up,” said Seese when asked what she struggled with during the tournament.

“I struggled with getting to the basket and putting myself on the foul line,” said Bainbridge.

Bainbridge said she is going to work on playing her hardest for the rest of the season, and she wants to conclude her season on a high note.

Seese said she wants to improve her shot and her confidence throughout the conclusion of the season.

“I feel like we have a lot of tough games left, but if we put in the work we can end win a few more and end on a good note,” said Bainbridge.

As the girls’ team was competing at Hughesville, the boys’ basketball team was competing at Loyalsock High School.

They went 1-1, and they played Selinsgrove and Bellefonte.

“I felt that after losing to Selinsgrove, we bounced back well the next day and left that game in the past,” said senior Shaw Simpson when asked about what the team did well.

Simpson that Selinsgrove was the hardest team because they underestimated them, and they did not come out with enough energy.

“We definitely struggled with energy and focus,” said Simpson. “We turned the ball over a lot and we didn’t play well enough on defense to make up for it. We can definitely work on playing as a team and build chemistry with each other, and our goal is to be more poised and confident.”

Simpson thought that he showed up for his teammates, and he consistently tried to keep the ball moving to make their defense work.

“I struggled with escaping their traps,” Simpson said. “There were a few times when I panicked and threw the ball away too easily. I’ve got to work on finding my way to the rim and scoring a bit more, and I’d like to play more intensely.”

Simpson had thoughts when asked about how he felt about the conclusion of their season.

“I’m confident in our team and I know our efforts will pay off.”
