On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, students went to Penn College to compete in the PA FBLA Region 7 Conference. The conference, commonly referred to as “Regionals,” is the first level of the FBLA competition.
At Regionals, students compete to go to the states competition by either taking an objective test on their computer or competing in a performance event live in front of judges, then at states, they can compete to go to the national competition. Performance events take place at the regional conference while everyone who took objective tests goes to leadership workshops.
“I honestly [did a lot of preparing] because I had to write my speech and then memorize the whole thing, and it was five minutes long,” said senior Cienna Twigg when asked about her preparation for the Public Speaking event.
Twigg placed second in the region out of 10 other students from multiple different schools.
“I didn’t know [if I would make it to states] because there were a lot of people in my category, but I was really happy that I came in second,” Twigg said.
Other performance events include things like Impromptu Speaking and Sales Presentation.
The other side of the competition is the objective tests, which students took on Dec. 12, 2024. Students taking objective tests had to wait a month before finding out if they made it to states at the award ceremony that takes place at regionals.
Sophomore Becca Teffeteller took the objective test, Intro to FBLA.
“I locked in for maybe three or four hours on the night before I had to take the test,” said Teffeteller. “I had to know a lot, but it was fine.”
Teffeteller said she and sophomore Elyse Boyle both took the test and thought they would not make it because it was so difficult, however, both ended up making it to states. Teffeteller placed first and Boyle placed fifth.
“I was really surprised when they called my name up,” said Teffeteller. This is her first time competing in FBLA, so making it to States in first place was a big achievement for her.
Overall this year, 33 people placed in the top 6 at Regionals, which FBLA adviser Mrs. Linda Keiser said is one of the highest numbers since COVID. Member numbers have been increasing since COVID-19 as Keiser has been building the program back up to where it is today.
“I’m confident we will have people make it to nationals this year,” said Keiser. She agrees that these students are a very promising group of people and they will continue to proudly represent Montoursville at the state and national level.
