A Look Around With Lindsay: What’s Cookin’?

Before we start out the real top 10 school lunches this year, I wanted to take the time to recognize some honorable mentions. These three did not make the top ten, but were still some of my favorites as well as popular ones throughout the student body, so it felt wrong to not include them.

3. Chicken Nuggets                                                                                                                                          You can never go wrong with good old chicken nuggets and fries. I will never complain on chicken nugget day! You can dip them in any of the sauces that our school has, and who wouldn’t want an excuse to eat like a kid again?

2. Chipotle Chicken Flatbread                                                                                                                      Sadly, this is not actually from Chipotle, and if I’m being completely honest I don’t think it actually tastes like Chipotle. I’m not saying it doesn’t taste good, obviously if that’s what I was saying then it wouldn’t be on here. But, I just don’t want anyone to have the expectation that they’re walking into their lunch period and about to get Chipotle. It is still very good though, and I can never pass it up.

  1. General Tso’s Chicken Bowl                                                                                                  Surprisingly, I actually hated this meal when I first started high school. My friends would all be in line for General Tso’s and I would go get pizza or yogurt instead. Then one time I got in line thinking that it said Popcorn Chicken Bowl, and when I got up there it clearly was not what I thought it was. I didn’t know what to do because I didn’t want to awkwardly walk away without getting anything – I mean the lunch ladies were standing right there watching us. So I grabbed one, paid, and sat down at my table. It’s pretty self explanatory from there on. Basically I learned that I loved this chicken bowl and I have never skipped it since.

10. Pizza                                                                                                                                                          This might seem like something incredibly boring to start out this list, but it truly is a staple to a week of school lunches. With so many unique options being offered, picky eaters are left to decide between the sub bar, a parfait, salad, sandwich, or pizza. Now what hangry teenager would not pick pizza? Plus, things can get extra fun when the beloved security guard here at Montoursville, Ed, gets to pick what kind of pizza is up for grabs! Another good reason why pizza made the top ten is because of its ability to be a fast and clean meal. Many students have things to do during their lunch periods, like make up a test or film a video for a project. Some students don’t even have room in their schedules for a lunch period. Pizza makes a great grab-and-go lunch for students who would have to go on an empty stomach the whole day if this wasn’t an option.

9. Grilled Cheese                                                                                                                                              The grilled cheese sandwich served by the cafeteria, comes with a bowl of delicious tomato soup. On grilled cheese day, I think it’s safe to say that 90 percent of the students’ trays during lunch periods have a bowl of soup and a buttery soft sandwich. A downside to this meal, however, is the level of messiness. Teens and tomato soup are two words that should never go together. But, that still doesn’t make it any less of an A+ lunch.

8. Spaghetti and Meatballs                                                                                                                         Another classic meal – but a nightmare for white shirts! Make sure to look ahead on the school website for spaghetti day so you can wear a safe outfit, and maybe also bring a Tide pen. I’m not kidding when I say that the amount of times I’ve been asked if I had a Tide pen on spaghetti day makes me want to lose my mind. On the bright side of this meal, most of the time it comes with an amazing piece of garlic bread!

7. Loaded Fries                                                                                                                                           Loaded fries are probably one of the few meals here at school that actually fills me up for a whole day. My friends that sit next to me in 9th period are probably so sick and tired of having to listen to my stomach growl. But that’s just how it is with a 10:30 a.m. lunch along with the recent snack ban. On days when I have loaded fries, though, I actually feel full and don’t feel as hungry throughout the day. I’m not quite sure why it is this specific meal that is able to hold me over until after 3 o’clock, but that got it extra points and also a spot on this list.

6. Holiday Specials                                                                                                                                         With the third marking period winding down, we students really only have one more break until the end of the year. We have our Easter break to look forward to, and then that is pretty much it. All the rest of our breaks have already happened. The popular ones, Thanksgiving and Christmas, always come with extremely good meals leading up to those last days of school before we leave. Before Thanksgiving break there is usually turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, corn, and a dessert of some sort. For Christmas, there’s ham, and similar sides to Thanksgiving. Coming from a high school student, believe me when I say that we are already excited enough to go on a break, and having an extra special meal just puts the cherry on top.

5. Mexican Bar                                                                                                                                                      I personally love when I have options to choose from for my lunch. So, the Mexican Bar which consists of nachos, soft tacos, burrito bowls, and walking tacos, is in my top fives school lunches here. This is already another popular one that everyone knows about, and it has just been accepted that it’s one of the fan favorites.

4. Chicken and Waffles                                                                                                                            Chicken and Waffles is one of my favorites, but can also be one of the most controversial. You either absolutely love chicken and waffles, or you 100 percent hate it. I just think that it is a really different combination of foods that many other schools probably don’t have. Plus I do think it is really good, and encourage you to give it a try!

3. Popcorn Chicken Bowl                                                                                                                             There is an ongoing joke between me and my friend group that I always eat the popcorn chicken bowls before anybody else can get them. I’m going to be honest, I would if I could! But popcorn chicken bowls are one of the best school foods, and it’s so good that sometimes my mom will even make it for dinner. Whenever my friends come over, they will literally ask if we can have popcorn chicken bowls. So if that doesn’t convince you to try one I don’t know what will!

2. Mac and Cheese                                                                                                                                           The only reason this is not number one, is because it can be very hit or miss. Some days it can be a completely full bowl, others half full. Sometimes it’s very cheesy and thick, others it’s runny. But no matter how much my bowl is filled, or however the cheese was made, I always get it and it never disappoints. Other students have said otherwise, but I say try before you deny!

  1. French Toast Sticks                                                                                                                                Of course, french toast sticks take the cake! I have an early lunch period so I’m never really hungry to get “lunch” food anyways. Plus, these french toast sticks are just so perfectly amazing and yummy. I cannot even think of any other words to describe them. I loved them so much the first time I had them, that my mom started buying them at the store to make on weekends. Also, a secret tip from me, if you’re getting the french toast sticks make sure to ask for extra french toast instead of sausage. Trust me, it’s worth it!
