To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” -Albert Einstein

Life is full of new beginnings.

They come willingly and unwillingly, whether we like it or not. The changing of the seasons. A new calendar year, and the beginning of a new sports season.

The most recent new beginning that is common for lots of us is the start of the new school year. (Yes, I know school started two months month ago – pardon my lateness in writing about this topic. As you know, it gets crazy REALLY quick!)

New school years come with so many things. Sports, music, and arts get back into full swing. Clubs have introductory meetings. Summer ends, and the leaves start changing colors as students slowly become more and more tired from their extensive workloads that builds upon itself daily. And soon enough, the activities and work that seemed like “just enough” to keep you busy – perfectly balanced – start to topple.

This happens to me every year. I start the new school year off a little too confident and get in over my head, telling myself that I just have to keep going and that my to-do list will diminish in a few days. I hit a bump in the road, and my bicycle starts to wobble.

So, if our balance is thrown off so soon, the question is: how do we keep moving?

What’s the secret?

Well, I haven’t found the answer to that yet, but here’s my best guess.

When you first get on a bike, you don’t just start moving. You start with sitting on the bike, and then slowly, you take your feet off the ground and try to stay upright. This is the most challenging part – which is why you need movement. But, you should also remember that when you ride a bike, there are so many other forces around you. I won’t get into the physics of it all (because I don’t actually know how it works), but let’s grasp the picture together. Think about wind, and how it pushes you in whatever direction it’s blowing. The force of gravity is keeping you on the ground. There are so many more than just those, too!

What are these “forces” in our lives? They look different for everyone.

For some, it’s friends. They rely on friends like they’re family and count on them for everything. For others, it’s (blood-related) family that has a bond that can’t be broken.

And many other times, it’s totally personal, and the forces are inside you to keep you accountable. You set goals, remain dedicated to your passions, and focus on positivity.

The reasons are endless. But I’ll leave you with this.

Life really is like riding a bike. It never stops, because if it stops, you’ll fall. But don’t forget to rely on the forces around you – have faith in yourself and let everyone around you be an encouragement to your journey.

And most importantly…

Just keep moving.

“Life is like riding a bicycle.
