UPMC career day expands students perspective on healthcare opportunities

On Wednesday April 15, MAHS students, along with many other schools, attended a UPMC healthcare career day held at Liberty Arena, Williamsport from 10 AM to around 1 PM.

This trip was organized by Mrs. Morgan Solomon, who has brought students to the event for the last four years.

“I decided to go to this event with students who are interested in the Healthcare field to learn more about the different careers in that setting,” said Solomon. “It gives students a good idea of what types of jobs are available as well as see firsthand what they might do while working.”

Students who attended said that the event helped them learn more about what certain jobs offer and what those who work those jobs specifically do.

“I learned how to apply to certain jobs that are offered to my age group and some of the school extracurriculars that can be joined,” said junior Reagan Gonzalez.

Sophomore Alexis Heim also mentioned that she “learned a lot about all the organizations that make up UPMC,” from attending this event.

The career day showed students not just the health careers that work one-on-one with patients, but also the jobs that may be more beneficial to non-sociable students.

“There is a big misconception that you have to work with patients in order to work in the hospital,” said Solomon. “There are many other jobs that do not require patient care, like environmental services, central processing, information technology, etc.”

This event also provided a variety of health-related activities for attending students to participate in.

Students who attended this event expressed enjoyment in not just learning about all the different health careers, but also getting to spend time with their friends outside of school.

“I would recommend attending this career day in the future,” said Solomon. “Each year we attend, it gets bigger and bigger with more opportunities for the students to learn hands-on about the different jobs within a hospital/healthcare setting.”
