Jessica Cole is the new head coach after working at it for years.
Jessica Cole has been the high school assistant cheer coach for seven years, this year after the stepping down of the former head coach Amber Doorman Cole became the new head coach.
Cole, a 2014 graduate, was a cheerleader while in high school here. Both her experience and personality traits make her a perfect choice for head coach, members of the team say.
“I love J’s fun personality and resilience,.” said Junior Brynn Connelly. “‘She is such a sweet person and always has a plan for practice or competitions. I love her silliness and generosity.”
Of course cheer has changed a lot over the years since she was cheering .
“Coaching is so different, but the love of the sport remains the same!” Cole said. “As a cheerleader your main focus is on the team. As a coach, you have to look at the big picture, how everyone contributes to the team, and how to utilize everyone’s skills to benefit the team as a whole.It’s like a puzzle every day, and the pieces are always changing.”
After a hard year last season Cole said she has so many new ideas while also keeping a healthy balance between professionalism and loving her cheer family. ‘“
“She has a really awesome way of connecting with the girls while also encouraging them in a way that doesn’t bring them down,it brings them up,.”English teacher and Junior high cheer coach Rebekah Lundy said.
Cole said she is here for new ideas and trends that can make this team better and more powerful.
“We have goals to keep working on in increasing the difficulty in our stunts, and really working hard on tumbling and strength training off season,.” she said.
Cole has also just been there as a coach and mentor for the other coaches and her girls.
“I think the whole team benefits from her as our coach,.” freshman cheerleader Emerson Metzger said. “She believes in us and gives us the confidence to actually try and make our routines good.”
Lundy has been the Middle school coach of three years now and said that Cole has helped her become a better coach “Jessica has helped me become a better coach by modeling how to balance having good relationships with your athletes while also holding the to high standards”
Cole said she has big plans for next year but so do the cheerleaders.
“Going into my senior year, I would like to see our program come back from our hard season and come together as a team,.” said Brynn Connelly. “I want our team to become more like a family and I want to hopefully win Districts again next year!”
Cole also said she has a plan to lead her team to victory at districts 2026 and hopefully make it and actually compete at nationals.
“I am so proud to see how the girls have grown as cheerleaders and as people in the short time I have known them all,” she said.
