This year’s musical takes a turn as the Theatre Department turns its usual fun and flashy to dark and dreary with “The Addams Family”! Don’t worry though – this show will still be tons of fun!
The show will take place on March 20-22, but there’s a lot of work to be done before the production is ready for the stage.
The first step in the process is auditions. These were held on November 4-6. Each day tests the actors’ different skills.
Day one is monologues and choreography. Auditionees must memorize and perform a paragraph called a monologue to perform for the director. They must also learn part of a dance from the choreographer and perform that as well.
Day two is all singing! Actors showcase their vocal talent by performing a song chosen out of two or three options listed in the audition packet. They learn (and preferably memorize) the song, and are called into the audition room one at a time to sing it with piano accompaniment. The whole group of auditionees also sings an ensemble section to gauge how they sound together.
Day three is callbacks. Not everyone has to attend this day – only those who the production team would like to see again. It’s great if you get a callback, but not getting one doesn’t mean you didn’t get a role! It all depends where the puzzle pieces fit together.
Learning this amount of material to have ready to perform for this three-day period is a lot of work, and can be nerve-racking!
“I was feeling really excited for the first night of auditions…because I love to dance,” said senior Alice Ravert, who auditioned for Morticia Addams. “I was feeling nervous for the second and third nights because I lost my voice and couldn’t sing like I usually do.”

Hurdles like losing your voice before an audition are common for singers, but this doesn’t stop their passion! Each auditionee didn’t let nerves and obstacles stop them and they each noted a favorite memory from audition night.
Junior Kristen Dinges, auditioning for Wednesday Addams, said, “Seeing all my friends and hyping people up before they auditioned” was her favorite part.
If the cast is making memories now, there’s definitely more to come!
Junior Carter Hepburn, who auditioned for Mal Beineke, said that he’s looking forward to “having a good time, and get[ting] to know everybody a lot better.”
Freshman Kassidy Foster has a similar take on this. She is eager to start rehearsals, and she said “having fun with friends and enjoying the experience” is what she’s most excited for.
The musical definitely offers amazing opportunities for students! Even though the audition process may seem scary, those who have auditioned before say it’s not as scary as one might think.
“There’s no harm in trying out,” said freshman Reagan Greene. “The scary part only lasts a few minutes for something so fun”!
