A new season calls for new beginnings

As the winter dreadfully rolls around, the atmosphere inside the school is filled with gloom until winter sports kick off their seasons.

Here at MAHS, Wrestling along with Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball, represent our school during the winter season.

Each team approaches their season with a different mindset and a different set of goals.

“We had a very good regular season record, but we need to improve with our talking on defense,” said Small Forward senior, Todd Crawford when reflecting on last year’s season.

Crawford is a part of the boys’ basketball team and they concluded their previous season with a record of 16-7.

Crawford has played basketball since he was in elementary school when he participated in the church basketball league, and he is looking forward to home games with the student section.

“I hope to improve my game by becoming more efficient with my left hand, but I need to improve my scoring so that I can average a good amount of points,” said Crawford.

Crawford wants to conclude his senior season with a winning record and averaging at least eight points a game.

“One positive was winning our last 10 games and one negative was losing in the playoffs. We need to work on better ball movement,” said Forward junior, Carson Menne.

Menne has played basketball since first grade, and he is most looking forward to the bus rides and bonding with the boys.

“I hope to grab a lot of rebounds and make a lot of 3’s. I hope to improve on having a better attitude towards the game,” said Menne.

“One positive was that I personally improved. I hope that we all can talk to each other about anything,” said Pointguard and Wing, senior Jordan Chamberlain.

Chamberlain is a part of the girls’ basketball team, and they concluded their season with a record of 8-15.

Chamberlain has been playing basketball since he was in 3rd grade and she is most looking forward to being a leader and pushing herself to try her very best every day of the season.

“I want to improve on my ball handling to be my best for my team. I also want to be over .500 this season and go to playoffs,” said Chamberlain.

“A positive from last season was making playoffs, a negative was losing 4 out of 5 of our varsity starters. A goal would be to end the season with a .500 record and I think our team will improve at all aspects of the game this year because we’re all determined,” said Point and Shooting Guard, junior Emily George.

George has played basketball since she was 6 when she participated in the John Bower League, but she seriously started in the 3rd-grade elementary program.

“I am looking forward to having a successful growth throughout the season because we are a very young, fresh team. I hope I can improve by keeping an open mindset, and staying at an even-keel as Coach Walker says. I also hope that I can improve on my ball handling and getting rebounds,” said George.

“One positive from the past season is that I made it to states and one negative is that I didn’t place during states. I hope to place as a team at states, as well as place individually,” said senior Landon Morehart.

Morehart is a part of the wrestling team here at MAHS and the team concluded their past season with a record 25-5.

Morehart said he has wrestled for nine years, and he currently competes in the 285lb weight class, he is most looking forward to individual states.

“I hope to place at states and qualify for the 100-win club, and I hope to improve on my offense throughout the season,” said Morehart.

“A positive would be the team making it to states, and a negative would be losing at the Regional Semifinals. The team hopes to improve on team chemistry throughout the season,” said junior Teli Bobaotas.

Bobotas said he has wrestled since 1st grade but started to wrestle year-round beginning in 5th grade. His weight class is currently undecided right now, but he is looking forward to getting 100 wins and beating Warrior Run.

“I will place at states, and I hope to place at states. I hope to be more of a leader to the underclassmen,” said Bobotas.
