It seems like when the summer months veer off into the premature dawn of the autumn season, coffee shops, candle companies, grocery store products and so much more, benefit and exploit this opportunity to release something that has pumpkin spice.

Before the crisp, rainy, foggy Pennsylvania autumn mornings take place going into September, pumpkin spice takes the two coffee shop giants by storm. On Aug. 22, Starbucks released its fall menu lineup, with Dunkin following them on Aug 28.

Pumpkin spice has not only taken coffee shops, but it has also taken over cosmetics supplies stores such as Bath and Body Works releasing their Halloween lineup, even earlier, on July. 19 of this year. With scents such as, “Purrfect Pumpkin,” which has scent notes of carved pumpkin, spooky cinnamon, and moonlight vanilla, according to their website.

Many factors contribute to why pumpkin spice is popular, such as location. For example, living in Pennsylvania where all four seasons happen. There are moments in autumn when everybody is taking a hayride at the local pumpkin patch to pick out pumpkins that will eventually take place in a part of the fall decorations or be mushed into a pie.

Statistically speaking, fall is America’s favorite season. From Morning Consult data, 41 percent of adults picked fall as their favorite season.

According to the statistics class at Montoursville High School which consists of approximately 20 people including the teacher, 60 percent of people chose fall as the best season.

Because of how short autumn is and how even shorter the peak foliage is, people instantly flock to get their pumpkin spice lattes, candles, creamers, and leaf decorations to add to the vibe that comes with the fall season.  They will also buying anything with a warm color palette to satisfy their fall decorating needs.

It is the seasonal appeal that makes pumpkin spice so popular. It is caused by people being drawn to autumn’s nostalgia and comfortability that only come once a year. The coziness of staying inside with a good show and a comfortable blanket only allures people to enjoy and appreciate the little things that come with autumn, a pumpkin spice latte, for example.

Autumn is a great time to be alive. It teaches people to appreciate the little things in life. Something as basic as a pumpkin spice latte, which people are quick to judge as being a “basic” and “tired” attribute of autumn, is a comforting and positive conversation starter in this world full of division.

Pumpkin spice is so popular because it brings people together. It is a great distraction from any problem that one might face as it is synonymous with a cozy fall day. One could argue that it isn’t even a trend in the fall months, but more of a tradition.
