A Look Around With Lindsay: Top 20 Halloween costumes trending this spooky season

Happy October! It is that time of the year when the air is getting colder, it is getting dark earlier, and kids are only talking about one thing – their Halloween costumes.

What I have done is I have chosen my 20 favorite costumes that I have seen trending so far this year and split them into categories. The categories are solo, duo, trio, and group. I hope you enjoy the October edition of “A Look Around With Lindsay!”

Solo Category

These costumes are ones that you can wear by yourself. You do not need to have a big group, or go out and buy matching things with anyone. They are perfect for if you are just going to a Halloween party, or handing out candy at your house.

#5 – Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice is a classic movie from the 80s that just recently got its sequel. Starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Jenna Ortega, the movie has taken social media by storm. Beetlejuice makeup looks, Beetlejuice character-inspired outfits, and of course the Halloween costumes.

#4 – Jake from State Farm

Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there! The classic saying that is heard during every commercial break of any sports event or TV show. This simple but hilarious costume was too good not to make the top 20 overall. Plus, there is no mistaking you for anyone else.

#3 – Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour has become the highest-grossing concert tour of all time, earning over one billion dollars. It will come as a shock to no one that there will be girls of all ages dressed up as different “eras” of Swift’s music career. Whether it is the classic “Red” shirt and hat, a shimmering “1989″inspired two-piece, or the iconic snake bodysuit seen during the “Reputation” set on the tour, all are destined to earn an extra piece of candy while Trick-or-Treating.

#2 – Jojo Siwa

The former “Dance Moms” star released her first song when she was just shy of 12 years old. The whole world knew her for her high ponytails, big bows, and funky energy. But in April of this year, she made a complete switch when she appeared in the music video for her new single Karma, dressed as some sort of creature from the ocean using unique geometric makeup. Social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, took this and ran and the music video quickly became the most disliked video ever (literally not even kidding, it set the record for most dislikes). However, I still don’t think that will stop people from dressing up as the worldwide meme. So do not be alarmed if you see a sea demon ringing your doorbell on Halloween night, they are just there for candy.

#1 – Leopard/Cheetah Print

This is such a simple, yet eye-catching look to wear for Halloween. It can never go out of style and is such a fun and easy way to dress up with your friends if you want to keep it casual. Another thing is, that it can fit anyone’s taste. There are leopard and cheetah-printed skirts, shorts, pants, t-shirts, tank tops, sweatshirts, headbands, and even socks and shoes. The design has already made its way to the top of the day-to-day fashion food chain, so just think how popular it will be on Halloween night.

Duo Category

These next four costumes are perfect for couples, best friends, or siblings. They are all well-known duos and are sure to be some of the most fun ones seen this year.

#4 – “Descendents: The Rise of Red”

After the “Descendents” actor, Cameron Boyce, tragically passed in 2019, it was unknown if another movie would be added to the Disney series. But sure enough, about halfway through the summer in July, “Descendents: The Rise of Red,” was released. It immediately took over TikTok with upbeat dances and catchy songs. You just can not expect to not see these on the 31st.

#3 – Hunter and Deer

Think about it, with hunting season coming right up, pretty much any guy has his camo sitting out and ready. That is why it is so perfect and convenient that Halloween is right around the corner. You could potentially only have to buy one costume to complete the duo, and who could complain about that? Plus, I can just imagine the fun pictures you could take while wearing this costume.

#2 – Sabrina Carpenter and Jenna Ortega

Between “Feather,” “Espresso,” “Please Please Please,” and “Taste,” I can pretty much guarantee you have heard one of Sabrina Carpenter’s latest hits. One specifically, has one of the most cinematic music videos of the year. “Taste” has almost 300 million streams since its release on the 23rd of August. Some could argue that it is just because Carpenter has a lot of fans, but in my opinion, it’s the fact that she managed to get Jenna Ortega on board and gain all of her fans as well. The 22-year-old TV star is seen throughout the music video getting into a series of bloody battles with Carpenter. The two posted a behind-the-scenes TikTok in their outfits, with of course the fake blood pulling it all together, and giving thousands the genius idea of a costume.

#1 – “Dumb and Dumber” Suits

The 1994 film starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels has many hilarious scenes (now that I think about it…it is every scene), but one in particular takes the gold medal. A fancy dinner party is taking place, and of course, these two show up in neon orange and sky blue suits. I would laugh out loud if I saw these in person, and I know so many others would too. (Boys, if you are running out of time coming up with an idea for a costume, you’re welcome!)

Trio Category

There are four costumes again in this category, and to be completely honest with you, they are some of my favorites out of this entire list of 20 costumes. With that being said, here are my top four trio costumes seen trending this Halloween season.

#4 – “The Powerpuff Girls”

Blossom (pink), Buttercup (green), and Bubbles (blue) are the tiniest and cutest cartoon superheroes. Airing for the first time in 1998, and lasting for six seasons, the three girls have come to be one of the most beloved trios in history. This is a costume that has been around for years, so it’s safe to assume that you’ll still see Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles this year, and for years to come.

#3 – “Toy Story” Aliens

I love costumes that can be adapted into more modern looks. Toy Story characters are a very good example of this but ultimately making this list are the aliens. You have the option of getting the full-blown costume or you can keep it light and trendy with a tinsel skirt and funny headband. What better way of bringing back a childhood movie than dressing up as the characters?

#2 – “Mean Girls”

No, this did not make the list just because Mean Girls Day, October 3, just passed. I genuinely love it when girls wear this costume, especially because it is their Halloween costume in the actual movie. I can only imagine how dramatic and silly photoshoots can get when wearing these costumes. There is only one reason why this is not number one, and that is because it is a stylish costume, but it just can not top a classic.

#1 – “Alvin and the Chipmunks”

Everybody, and I mean, everybody knows the chipmunks. Starting as an animated TV series in 1983 and then becoming one of the most famous movie series in 2007, three brothers in crime made their mark in history. Speaking from experience, dressing up as Alvin, Simon, and Theodore is one of the most fun times you could ever have. Like I said before, you have to love a costume that you can match to the current trends. This is another one of those, and you can make it as feminine or as masculine as you want. That is why this took the number one spot in this category because it is well-known, but not to the point where it is over-used, and you have complete and total freedom with it where you can be as creative as you want.

Group Category

This last category is filled with costumes that are good for groups with more than three people. It is a very broad category, with lots of different styles. These remaining six costumes are the ones that I feel are most unique. They are not ones that you see a whole lot of, which makes it even more fun to dress up when you know that your group will not just be a carbon copy of every other group.

#6 – Super Mario

With the new movie having just come out, we are bound to see these this year. But, if you can manage to make plans with a big group, it will be extra fun. Not many people can get a group of six plus to all have the time to get together. Picture having Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Daisy, Donkey Kong, Bowzer, Toad, Toadette, Yoshi, and Waluigi all together. Even if you ran into another Mario or Princess Peach, your group would be the life of the party.

#5 – Cops and Robbers

Believe it or not, the children’s game, similar to tag, can be twisted into a Halloween costume too. Getting basic Prisoner and Cop costumes from any Halloween store will suffice for this group costume. This one is super fun for pictures on the big night, and who knows, maybe you could even play a round or two of Cops and Robbers while you are out that night!

#4 – Bratz Dolls

Even though Bratz Dolls have been discontinued from store shelves, that does not mean it can not still be a Halloween costume, right? Similar to “The Powerpuff Girls” costume, this one has been trending every Halloween for quite some time. It is for a good reason too, They are one of the shiniest and most appealing costumes that have ever become a trend. You will for sure see them this season, and for many to come.

#3 – Frat Boys

Becoming a trend somewhere in between the autumns of 2019 and 2020, when let us be honest, nobody had any energy to put effort into their Halloween costumes, “frat boy” is one of the most recognizable yet painfully easy costumes. Put on an oversized button-up with some biker shorts, add some high-top sneakers, and throw on a backward baseball hat. Boom. You are now a frat boy according to the internet. Another super fun one where you can get silly for pictures, but also be comfy for your long night out.

#2 – “Inside Out” Characters

Maybe it is just because it was one of my favorite movies growing up, but I just could not help but put Riley’s famous emotions on this list. I grew up with Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear, but now thanks to the 2024 sequel, there’s also Anxiety, Envy, Embarassment, and Ennui. Whatever floats your boat, full-on costumes from Amazon or Party City, or just go as the main color of each character. Once you are together as a group, it will not matter either way because they are so liked by all ages, that there will not be one second of doubt on who you guys are.

#1 – Sodas

This is so completely one hundred percent controversial, but hear me out. This could quite possibly be one of the most unique costumes we will see this year. I have seen it multiple times on my social media feeds and so that tells me one thing – it is only going to get more popular. Trends work like that. Also, I can tell that you are probably picturing some giant soda can costume from Spirit Halloween, that you have time to climb into and sweat in all night. But no, the ones that I have seen are shirts with a certain logo on them, and then matching colored skirts or pants and shoes. So anyway, I hope you see why this is number one for me. It’s so fun and completely different, and come on, you can dress up as your favorite soda for Halloween. How much better could it get?

Those are my top 20 costumes that are trending so far this year. In the number one spot are Leopard/cheetah print, “Dumb and Dumber” suits, “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” and sodas. Thanks for taking “A Look Around with Lindsay,” I hope you enjoyed the rankings on this list, and maybe you even found an idea for your Halloween costume. Happy Halloween, everyone!
